7 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Working with Crystals

Hibiscus Moon book, ceremony, Crystals 16 Comments

I’ve been meaning to do a post like this for quite some time b/c I, myself, love to read about about other people’s ‘mistakes’ when learning something new. This way I can learn more from a different perspective while also avoiding those common pitfalls. I’m always a champion for efficiency…why reinvent the wheel? That’s always extremely valuable for me so I hope this blog post of my personal crystal experiences does the same for you.

Since I’ve already written or chattered on about several of these topics in the past I’ll put lots of reference links here if you’d like to dig deeper on that specific topic. OK? 🙂

And lastly, let me preface this post by stating (as I always do) that this is what I’ve found to be true & what has worked for me. I don’t claim anything to be “right” or “wrong”. If you’re doing something that contradicts what I say & its been working for you then KEEP ON TRUCKIN’, Lima Bean!
7 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Working with Crystals
1. How to Cleanse
When I first began getting into the metaphysical side of crystals, most of the info I scoured said I needed to cleanse my crystals of “their former absorbed energy” in some way. There are many proposed methods on how to do this. And for a long while,  my favorite method was a 7 Day Salt Water Cleanse. Then I discovered sound acoustics & I’ve never turned back. Its so much easier & practical while being physically safe for all stones, no matter their hardness. Here’s a vid I did explaining more on that:

Crystal Energy Cleansing using Sound: How To Cleanse Your Crystals

2. Cleansing is not necessary as often as some may think but is required for ALL crystals
The books I read in the beginning & the crystal-chats I’d have with others lead me to some dogma that had me thinking the crystals needed to be “cleansed” at every turn; every full moon, every time I used them for anything, if someone else touched them or even looked at them the wrong way. After working with crystals & stones extensively I don’t feel this to be true at all. It doesn’t have to be a BIG production. Sure, I do agree that at times it is very necessary to re-tune your crystals but much of this is what I call the “Sparkly Pomp & Circumstance”. 😉  C’mon…you know we totally get off on all the formal ceremony schist that can surround working with crystals.

This also ties into the idea that there’s also some very stubborn glittery dogma that says certain special crystals NEVER need re-tuning (cleansing) no matter what. I don’t feel that’s the case either:

Do All Crystals Need to Be Cleansed?

So my stance on this 1 is that our crystals & stones don’t need to be re-tuned as often as some would lead you to believe, but I do feel they all need it at some point. None are exempt.
3. There may be several names for the SAME stones
Sometimes a stone has a formal geological mineral name while also having a more well-known name. For instance, spodumene is AKA kunzite. Or ruby, sapphire & corundum are all the same thing. There are many others which time & experience will expose you to more & you’ll just start to absorb this stuffs. Some good crystal reference books will help with this as well. (I’ll reference a couple that I always recommend below.)

But to make matters even more confusing, we now have some people choosing to actually trademark already known minerals (or special sub-varieties of that mineral) with a more metaphysically-pleasing name. Here are just a few examples of that:

  • Azeztulite™ = quartz masses w/ various inclusions
  • Zultanite™ = diaspore
  • Sacred Seven Stone™ = Cacoxenite Amethyst
  • Infinite™ = greenish grey serpentine

Now we all know that trademarked names are used all over the place like so much toilet paper but no one is FORCED to use them if they choose not to. Like, I call my toilet paper just that or I can call it “Charmin”. Totally up to me, right? I personally see no reason for these names to have been glammed up & trademarked. Since it just makes matters confusing for us all, I refuse to use the trademarked names to refer to minerals that already have a proper name.

Yep, I chose to ignore & KISS: keep it simple, Sweetie!

4. Most commercially available citrine on the market is heated amethyst

Yes, that pretty orange glittery stone is usually not the REAL DEAL. But I don’t feel that it cannot be used as citrine, so please don’t toss it out! I recently did an extensive blog post all about this here.
5. When shopping at a gem/mineral show no woo-woo talk!
So, I’d get to the gem show with my shopping list & reference book in hand (The Crystal Healer) & could be heard across the entire row of seller’s calling out to my hubs:

“Look for one with a record keeper on it. I need it for my third eye!”

Yeah….not a good idea.

Some of these mineral dealers have finely tuned woo-woo sensing radar & when they spot 1 of us in the crowd their eyes glaze over. You’re there trying to make deals & its just not working out. Now you know a possible reason why.

Be sensible & don’t gave yourself away. Just for today, take off your Stevie Nicks shawl, put away your fairy necklace or your Namaste T-shirt (*hey! I love that stuffs too…but sometimes it benefits us to keep our super-hero uniforms under wraps*) . You know… make yourself blend in with the other Regular-Joe mineral collectors. And “Hush!” with all the woo-woo speak. The whole point of going to these shows is to hunt for the stones with the cool metaphysical bells & whistles without making it obvious that you know about that side of it so you can get them at a good price. So don’t blow it! I recently did a blog post with other shopping tips here.
6. Most crystal healing books say the same thing over and over
Yes, I do have more crystal books than I care to admit. That’s b/c in the beginning I was ravenous for the info (as I’m sure you were or are too)…until I began to realize that much of the info is repetitive (& then some of it conflicts) Now, I’m very selective with the crystal books I buy. I feel its good to have a couple highly recommended crystal reference books on hand & then get in there & work with your stones & find out what they really do for you personally. No book can ever tell you that.

I do have two books that I highly recommend to all my students if you don’t already have one that you really love:

And…in this video I go over my personal book recommendations in detail:

Crystal Healing Book Recommendations

7. You don’t have to memorize every crystal & what it does before you start working with them
At first, I thought:

“Oh, I’m not ready yet”. I need to learn more & see if there’s a perfect crystal for this or that before I actually do anything.”

Eventually, I got tired of waiting & began meditating & using my crystals. Doing that made me wish that I had started the whole process sooner.

Listen Crystal Hottie, there is no perfect method, stone or time to begin your crystal practice. you don’t have to wait to take a course or be certified or read all the books on the subject. My best advice here is to just dive in & start working with them. Just get to it! 🙂

Sparkly Blessings!

Crystals for Spring (or Autumn) Equinox

Hibiscus Moon astronomy, ceremony, Crystal Grids, Crystals, meditation, spirituality 13 Comments

Spring equinox is coming up!! Do you know what crystals to use with this event?

No, I don’t have a religion or dogma that I subscribe to but I’ve said it before, I really feel a strong pull towards following the cosmic cycles. Back to nature, ya know? Back to what the ancients intuitively did & many still do. There’s a reason it worked so well for so long.

When it comes to feeling what resonates with my soul, I go with natural cycles & have this aversion to our modern Gregorian calendar. Oh yeah, its all fine & good for day to day getting shiz done but when it comes to health, soul nourishment + spiritual balance, the natural cosmic cycles ring my bell.

So before I get to the crystals, let’s tawk equinox stuffs for a sec.

The  Spring Equinox (or Autumn Equinox for those in the Southern Hemisphere) is upon us (Wednesday, March 20, 2013).
2 Cosmic Cycles Toys:

  • Here’s a great site that explains all about the upcoming equinox.
  • How about an awesome FREE app that keeps track of the Sun & Moon, Equinoxes, Solstices + more (iPhone + iPad only)?

If you live on the Northern Hemisphere, the Spring Equinox represents renewal time. We just had our introspective hibernation time & its time to emerge & start the growth cycle again. I view this time as the NEW beginning. My new year! Its a time to set goals & plan them out. What am I going to do & how am I going to do it? This is so exciting & so much FUN for me!!! Is it b/c I’m a Capricorn? Nah, I think if you have the right perspective on it, this can be fun no matter what sign  you are. 😉
Spring Equinox Crystals for Growth + Goal-Setting + Planning
The crystals that embody ideal energies for growth + planning for me are:

  • green aventurine
  • dendritic agate
  • chrysoprase

I will usually set them out as I fill out planning sheets, work with my biz coach, plan vacations with my hub-bub, Frankie, etc. This is for BIG PLANS & GOALS…for the whole year. If I need mediation time to figure things out then I will mediate & work with 1 of these stones.

Spring Equinox Crystals for Balance
No matter where you are on Mother Earth, the equinoxes are all about balance & harmony b/c this a time that we receive equal amounts of sun & moon energy. EVERYWHERE on the planet.

So 2 more crystals I like to use are:

  • moonstone
  • sunstone

I’ll use these stones on my altar within my sacred space or in a crystal grid to honor these energies.

I REALLY LOVE this time of year!

These stones…for me…embody balance between masculine & feminine energies, ying & yang, sun & moon, 2 polarities. The vibrational frequencies of these stones are PERFECT for reminding us to stay balanced in all aspects of our lives.

Welcome Spring (or happy Harvest if you’re below the equator!)
Super Sparkles to you today!!!

P.S. Not quite sure how to “work with” & meditate with your stones for clarity, Lima Bean? My Get to Know Your Crystals eKit can get you all set on that path for the cost of 2 coffees. 🙂 You can check that out here.

Does Crystal Healing Go Against Your Religion?

Hibiscus Moon ceremony, Crystal Healing, Gem Elixirs, spirituality 98 Comments

I am often asked what religion I am.

OR if using crystals or crystal healing is “evil” or “goes against the bible”.

That last bit ASTOUNDS me.

As the founder & teacher of the Hibiscus Moon Certified Crystal Healer Course,  I must address this topic.

I’m taking a risk here again.

I usually don’t like to discuss religion or politics but I feel that in this case…it needs to be addressed. I am not looking to start a firestorm here at all but just state my opinion. It doesn’t mean that my opinion is the best one, its just mine. That’s all.

By writing this, I’ll also have a post to refer peeps to next time I get asked this question. 🙂

PLEASE NOTE: Flaming will not be tolerated here. This is a negativity-free zone. (Although I enjoy a healthy & mature debate be forewarned that any nasty, negative or demeaning comments here on MY BLOG will be promptly deleted so don’t waste your energy…go post it on your own blog.)

As for a religion, I have no desire to follow a religion. Too many rules & I don’t like labels. I like to have the freedom to change my mind as I explore various philosophies or energies & discover new things. I used to refer to myself as an “Earth-based spiritualist”, but I no longer want to limit myself to Mother Earth, as much as I love it here! So that doesn’t fit anymore.

I’ve also decided to try not to use the word “believe” b/c I feel that implies some type of “buy-in” & I want to allow myself to be free to do & feel what I like at any particular time. I have the right to change my mind & so do you…if you want to exercise that right.

My uncle recently summed up what I currently am doing when I heard him utter this phrase a few weeks ago during a frequently had yet friendly family debate (…sort of making fun of it, but my heart skipped when I heard it!): “SMORGASBORD OF FAITH: THE ALL YOU CAN BELIEVE BUFFET”. I love that! Genius.

YES! Whatever makes sense & intuitively resonates with me + FEELS right to me is what I explore & try on for size these days.

I also don’t just hang out with those who believe what I “believe”. I don’t judge or discriminate. I’ll hang with whoever lights me up & who I vibe with! That could be a priest, rabbi, witch, nun, new age guru, shaman or atheist. As long as the goal is to make the world a better place, deliver joy & eliminate harm whenever possible, then it’s all good with me. I LOVE HAVING THAT CHOICE!! 🙂
How Crystals Relate to Religion
I feel that crystals & crystal therapy can be incorporated into your life no matter what religion you follow…or don’t follow. 😉 Beautiful + scrumptious crystals and stones have been a part of many religions for thousands of years. They’ve been used in various rituals, traditions, altars, tools, laying on of hands, carried around & used as medicine as far back as history has been recorded.

What really floors me is when some who consider the Bible a most influential book also claim crystals are EVIL.  YET the Bible itself, one of the oldest books known to man, has over 200 references to uses of crystals & stones. The purposes mentioned run the gamut from representing tribes to protection to healing.

There’s also reference to crystals & gems in many ancient Religions going as far back as 6000 years. Chinese, Egyptian, Ayurveda, Aborigine, Native American, Polynesian cultures & traditions among many others all made extensive use of stones.

In addition, these practices have been essentially unchanged all this time. When something stays unchanged for so long, that means its essentially been perfected…even Mother Nature subscribes to this. Sharks haven’t evolved much b/c they don’t need to. Their design is pretty darn good as is!
I’ve noticed: in nature, when a design or program is successful, it changes very little, if at all.
So, in a nutshell, people all over the world of all backgrounds, traditions, cultures & religions can, have & continue to use crystals as they always have.

Its all good when you follow your own deep intuition & heart. You know what’s right for you & your path. Don’t you, Sweet Pea?

So what feels right to you Jelly Bean? Please feel free to comment below.
