How to Tell the Difference | Merlinite, Mystic Merlinite & Blizzard Stone

Hibiscus Moon Crystals 12 Comments

I decided it was high time to write this blog post to help eliminate some confusion around three minerals that are often confused with each other:

  • Merlinite
  • Mystic Merlinite
  • Blizzard Stone

These 3 stones are ones that my students sometimes aren’t quite sure how to tell apart and the naming itself can be quite confusing.

Merlinite
The name merlinite is what’s known as a marketing term & not a technical geological one, however I feel it’s a useful name that helps us to distinguish it.

[caption id="attachment_18057" align="alignright" width="264"] Dendritic Agate aka Merlinite[/caption]

This stone is actually a dendritic agate that is mostly white with black dendrite “branches”; a combination of  a quartz (the white in this stone) over psilomelane (manganese oxide)…the black in this stone. The psilomelane has a tree branch-like pattern to it & that’s where it gets the “dendritic” part of its name.

Metaphysical Properties:

Merlinite is all about magic and boosting your intuition. You can also use it for past life recall.

Additionally, this stone is great for connecting with the elementals, making psychic connections, and allowing you to peer between the veils and dimensions; allowing you to make connections with the spirit world, pulling back the veil so you can see what’s going on in those other dimensions. It’s a rather forceful energy though, so be careful when working with it. You may want to go slowly & try it out in small doses at first.

Now to make this really confusing, there’s a type of dendritic opal that looks really similar to merlinite and people also call this kind of opal “merlinite” even though its not the same thing. Different minerals…I know…this can get very confusing.

[caption id="attachment_18058" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Merlinite Dendritic Opal variety[/caption]
Mystic Merlinite
First let’s set the record straight on the name. It’s real geological name is indigo gabbro. It seems as though a trademark was attempted on “Mystic Merlinite” but then was abandoned so it never went through. Anyhow, the name indigo gabbro is the name I prefer to use to eliminate confusion along with false price inflation based on a name. What’s in a name? Apparently, a lot. 😉

Why do we need 2 different names for the same thing anyway? I’m not down with that.

Gorgeous indigo gabbro is newly discovered & only found on the island of Madagascar. It’s a black stone with large grey mottling in it that can be polished to a high shine. If you hold it out in the sunlight, you’ll notice that the greys in it have a sort of violet iridescence that’s beautifully unique.

Metaphysical Properties: A gentle stone, I find it to be quite lovely to work with it at New Moon time & for setting intentions at that time. It also has a very calming quality to it.

Blizzard Stone
This stone is also a type of gabbro & this name is another marketing term, however I also appreciate this name b/c it helps us to distinguish it from a number of other different types of gabbro. This is also a black gabbro, but this time with tiny specks of white, hence its name. Unlike indigo gabbro, it doesn’t polish up with a glassy finish.

Made up of a number of different minerals it’s found throughout the Alaskan Wilderness, another good reason for it’s appropriate name.

Metaphysical Properties: Another gentle stone, as gabbros usually are, blizzard stone is one to turn to for balancing of our energies. I also find it to be useful for protection from EMF pollution and a wonderful grounding stone.

Top 4 Crystals to Work with Moon Energy

Hibiscus Moon moon, Videos 23 Comments

Let’s talk about crystals we can use to work with moon energy. Whether it be for the full moon, new moon or any phase of the moon.

Intention
I feel that when you’re working with different phases of the moon, it’s not so much about the specific crystals that you choose to work with, because there are several different ones, but more about your intention of working with that particular moon phase.

There are several crystals that have vibrational frequencies that align with the moon in general, no matter what phase the moon is in at that particular time. Which is great b/c it makes uncomplicated work of it.

Again, it doesn’t matter whether it’s full moon or new moon, what I feel is most important is that you be very clear on what your intentions are & that you align them with that particular phase of the moon.

Here’s a very general summary of those energies…
Full Moon Energy

  • It’s a time when you reap what you’ve sown.
  • It’s when you’re grateful for whatever lessons you’ve learned in last moon’s cycle, or for whatever intentions and seeds that you planted that actually came to fruition.
  • It’s about completion.
  • Yang energy.

New Moon Energy

  • A time to plant seeds and a time of new beginnings.
  • Starting and growing something new.
  • Great time to set intentions.
  • Yin energy.

** If you’d like to learn more about setting intentions with new moon energy, I created an earlier blog post on setting intentions at the New Moon over here. And if you’d like some tips on working with the Full Moon & Your Crystals head over here. **

The crystals I’m recommending here resonate very strongly with moon energy at all phases.
My Crystal Recommendations for working with Moon Energy

1.  Selenite
Selenite is a beautiful crystal that actually has a sort of iridescence or sheen to it that reminds us very much of the moon.  It’s got that tell-tale moon beam glow.

Selenite embodies goddess energy, and it’s a crystal that allows us to more easily communicate with our higher selves.

Selenite often comes in many different forms.  It can be polished, like a heart or a palm stone, or shaped into a wand. Sometimes you will see the natural selenite towers, which come in a range of sizes from small to large.

You may have even heard about this beautiful, magical selenite crystal cave in Mexico.  Have you heard of it?   It’s called the Cave of Giants, where these huge selenite, (actually, gypsum; gypsum is selenite) humongous crystals have grown.

It’s not a place we can visit. No, not a place we can go.  Too dangerous. It’s very difficult for even the geologists to go down there, but it’s just so magical to even think about and even know that a place like that exists on mama earth!  Ya know?

It’s like the fortress of solitude that Superman went to while growing up and he learned all his stuff and all his knowledge and connected with his higher self. 😉
2.  Moonstone
The next crystal for working with moon energy may come as no surprise to you, it’s moonstone.  I have a moonstone, that I show you in the video, that  just so happens to be carved into a sphere, so it looks very much like Luna herself.

It doesn’t need to be white moonstone, it can be any kind of moonstone, there’s even peach or black moonstone.

Some of them will have a  flashy iridescence to them that you can see in certain light which is quite beautiful.

[caption id="attachment_3212" align="aligncenter" width="600"] moonstone tumbled stones[/caption]

Any kind of moonstone is great for working with lunar energy at any moon phase.

It’s all about goddess and feminine energy. Makes sense b/c the moon itself is actually known to embody that goddess feminine energy.

Moonstone is also great for allowing you to more efficiently tap into your intuition.

It’s also about mystery.  So, if you’re looking to align with that while working with certain lunar cycles, then you’ll want to work with moonstone.
3.  Labradorite

Labradorite is another great choice to work with moon energy.  It’s actually closely related to moonstone and it has that similar flash; a blue flash that you get in certain light, that iridescent quality again.

Labradorite is all about tapping into magic.  Plus it’s also quite protective.  If you’re feeling like you need some protective vibrational frequencies during a certain phase of the moon, then go ahead and try working with labradorite.
4.  Opal

And another stone that we can work with to more closely align ourselves with that type of lunar energy is opal.

Opal allows us to align with that water energy so it’s also about purification.

Any type of true authentic opal will do, it doesn’t need to be white precious opal either. There are many different kinds.

Just don’t reach for opalite as a replacement, b/c that is a man-made “stone” & will not deliver the same kind of energy at all (which I talk about in this blog post.).

Well, I hope you like my picks for working with moon energy, Crystal Hottie!

Do you have certain stones you like to use for  the waning / new moon & during the waxing / full moon?  Are your go-to stones included in my list?

5 Steps for Setting Intentions & Manifestation with Crystals at New Moon

Hibiscus Moon Crystals, moon 10 Comments

If you’ve followed me a bit, you know that I love looking to the Moon cycles to plan out certain events & biz moves.

I’ve talked about what I do with my crystals at the Full Moon before.

But…today I’d like to talk about the New Moon & some New Moon Crystals.
New Moon Energies

First of all…why work with lunar energies at all?

My undergraduate degree is in biological anthropology where I learned about many cultures, going back thousands of years, that have looked to the Moon to govern their daily activities for everything!…from the spiritual to the mundane. Even today, many cultures still hold to this sage practice. I realized long ago that when anything stands the test of time, it’s most likely b/c it works…it’s tried & it’s true.

The ancients realized that everything on our planet depends on & is affected by the natural rhythms of our Moon.

Learning how to tap into the ageless influence of the Moon cycles to not only support & strengthen yourself spiritually, emotionally, mentally & physically but to fortify your manifestations & dreams will open up a whole new GLITTERY world to you! 😀

There are differing schools of thought & cultural thinking on this, but the teachings I follow dictate that the New Moon is all about:

  • renewal
  • washing away
  • cleansing
  • birthing
  • beginning anew
  • planting seeds
  • starting new projects

Even the modern Farmer’s Almanac considers the New Moon to be a “fertile & wet” period so they recommend it as a great time for planting seeds.
RESOURCES

  • If you’re interested in learning more about the Moon cycles, I highly recommend this book:
  • And here’s a Moon Phase Calendar you can use
  • Why not download an app to your phone? Here ya go! iPhone and Android
  • I’ve added the Phases of the Moon Calendar to my Google Calendar so I always have it there to guide me when planning anything!

Crystals & the New Moon
So…at every New Moon, I try to either do a mini cleansing out ceremony on my own or I get to a Women’s New Moon Drumming circle to drum it all out!

5 Steps for Setting Intentions & Manifestation with Crystals at New Moon
1. First, I’ll gather the crystals I’ll be working with. This can vary greatly depending on what I want to manifest. But cleansing out energy from the last lunar cycle is always a must. Its like cleaning house.

Some tried & true crystals to work with at this time are:

  • staurolite (for physical body cleansing)
  • halite or clear quartz for energetic cleansing
  • labradorite for tapping in to the magic of the new moon
  • indigo gabbro for connecting to new moon energy, planting seeds and clear intention setting
  • moonstone always helps for tapping into lunar energies.

2. Then I begin by being in (or creating) sacred space. If you don’t already have my free eKit on Creating Sacred Space with Crystals, then grab that now.  That will usually consist of sage smudging the space that  I’ll be in ceremony in.

This is the smudge prayer to the four directions that I use:

We call on the Spirit of Sage to drive away negativity from our circle.

Spirit of the East, Great Spirit of Air, Bring peace and inspire this circle.

Spirit of the South, Great Spirit of Fire, energize and protect this circle.

Spirit of the West, Great Spirit of Water, bring purity and cleanse this circle.

Spirit of the North, Great Spirit of Earth, ground and strengthen this circle.

Great Father Sky, guard this circle from above.

Great Mother Earth, nurture this circle from below.
3. Next, I’ll contemplate what I’d like to cleanse & clear out & if there’s anything I’d like to “plant seeds” for. I’ll write those things down in a special notebook just for this purpose.

4. Now, I’ll take the crystals & place them on my altar along with lighting some candles. Sometimes, I’ll create a crystal grid dedicated to my purpose & intentions.

5. I’ll usually play some nice meditation music from Pandora &  choose a crystals from the ones I’ve selected for this New Moon. With that crystal in my receptive hand, I’ll get comfy  & do a short dedicated meditation  focusing on the intentions, usually no more than 15 min.

So, that’s it. Not too complicated, but VERY POWERFUL!

I hope you enjoy this ceremony at the next New Moon. And if you have your own way of honoring the moon cycles using crystals, please post in the comments below!

Crystal Blessings & Tons of Moon Beams!!
